The printing industry is said to be responsible for around 10% of volatile organic compound emissions.

Not so very long ago, the notion of environmentally responsible sourcing of paper products for printers and publishers hardly came into question. Recycled papers didn't offer the optimal whiteness needed for professional printing and the forestry industry was facing stark criticism for clear-cutting great expanses of forest.

Today, the paper industry, long targeted by environmentalists, is at the forefront of the sustainability movement, making great changes to reduce emissions and waste. It has become a model for other industries, with NGOs, manufacturers, social groups and forestry companies working together to effect change.

Companies are adopting more sustainable procedures, using chemical-free printing units, reducing the amount of alcohol used in print production and buying vegetable oil based inks.

In the interest of the environment, LCS Design and Print has sought and collated a list of print contacts that are making a conscious effort to use natural resources sparingly and minimise the impact of their procedures on the surroundings.

You can help the environment by:

If you haven’t reviewed your options in environmentally friendly paper in a while, it might be time to do so. There are currently more than 50 papers on the market made from recycled paper, 20 of which contain 100% recycled content. Others contain anywhere from 10% to 90% recycled content and brightness levels up to 97. Many are also produced using more environmentally friendly bleaching processes, such as processed-chlorine free or elemental-chlorine free processes.

Here are some of your options for recycled, PCF paper:

* Save-a-Tree -100% post-consumer recycled, clean white and process chlorine free (PCF). Available in coated or uncoated, text or cover weights as well as envelopes.
* Astrolite PC 100 - Extremely clean 100% post-consumer reclaimed materials. Archival quality - alkaline pH and buffered for longevity, process chlorine free (PCF). Available in text and cover weights, including 130 lb. double thick cover.
* Genesis - 100% recycled, acid free and ecologo certified. Available in uncoated text or cover weights as well as envelopes.
* Synergy -100% post-consumer recycled fiber. Available in coated or uncoated, text or cover weights.
* ENVIRONMENT® - 100% post-consumer recycled, FSC certified fibers archival quality, acid free. Available in coated or uncoated, text or cover weights.
